Using Twitter in the classroom is a great way to allow students to interact with the global community, gain outside perspectives, connect with others, and to communicate in general. This being said, it also seems to be one source of technology that lots of educators are hesitant to proceed with, possibly because the idea of using social media in the class poses a certain risk factor. I was able to find many great articles like “60 examples of Twitter” and “100 ways to use social media” which both suggested examples of how to use Twitter in the class. However, I was still struggling with how to use Twitter in a consistent enough way that it would actually be a routine part of class instead of just a “fun experiment” that you might try one day for the sake of looking good in your PD reports. After a few days of hard researching and brainstorming, I have come up with an outline for possible Twitter/ technology enriched activities that I think could easily be used to bring a regular novel study unit to life. I have based this information around the grade 9 English Alberta SLOs, and quotes were taken from the novel “Touching Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelsen. This week was an eye-opener for me because once I realized how Twitter could be used more as a "home base" for class projects, it opened up the chance to consider how other technology could be incorporated as well.
